China and Japan are neighbors and both influenced by the same Han cultural circle.Though Japan is deeply affected by Chinese culture; it has its own characteristics. Japanese culture absorbs and condemns all sorts of cultural at different times. It absorbs Buddhism and Confucian classics but does not deeply, just like two of Japan's classic-ikebana and bushido, both are so extreme. The Heike Monogatari (1223-1242) was published in a period of transition from the Peace to the Kamakura. Heike Monogatari come out as a great landmark for the battlefield monogatari. It also symbolizes the completion of the battlefield Monogatari of kamakura period and the coming of the epic of heroic age.In the Heike Monogatari we can always find the Japanese culture has strongly two sides:On the one side,it is the pursuit of good things, such as the beautiful faces, the romantic loves, the men's exquisite emotions and the describe to the samurai spirit, so people always used the word "chrysanthemum" to describe this novel. On the other side, the cruel reality always plays jokes on people's fates, such as the variable of life, the ugliness of self-serving or mediocrity, so people always use the words "sword" to describe it.This novel reflects the "dual character" of Japanese culture have deeply historical roots. The reason mainly is that the traditional Japanese religion and Taoism are inseparable, and Shinto which is still extended to now, is the oldest religious in Japan. Shinto absorbs and condemns different cultures from several countries at different times, which is especially manifested in the battlefeild monogatari---the Heike Monogatari. In the Heike Monogatari, the author divided the "Dual Character" into three parts:the first one is the specific expression of the "Dual Character", and the second and third parts are the main reasons for the "Dual Character". The first part can be due to three aspects:the first aspect is the contrast of beauty and ugliness, including the contrast between beauty and ugliness, love and hatred in the article, the beauty of language and cruel war, the horror to the war and the quest for beauty. The second aspect is the variable of fate. It also divided into three parts:the futility in the face of fate, the choice of fate and the silent opposition. The third aspect is feminism, and the beautiful images, women are not tools but have a irreplaceable status, cubically figure of women who have their own value of daring pursuit of love and the feminine of men'feeling contains. All of above are the concrete presentations of the "Dual Character" of Japanese literature, which arouse a lot of questions:Why Japanese literature has so different and unusual style? The second and third part is to elaborate this question in the point of history and culture. From the analysis of the "Dual Character" of The Heike Monogatari, I think, the "Dual Character" of Japanese literature has a profound historic and cultural origin, and it is not a simple words "Dual Character" or "Unusual" can be presented, so when we analyzing or study a foreign culture, we should contact with the specific history and culture, only in this way can we understand more profoundly.
