Calligraphy and the Chinese traditional opera are two very different kinds of arts; however, many performers of traditional opera practise hard for calligraphy, in fact, some of them achieved a quite high level. This is an important phenomenon that reveals the link between the above two. This intimate connection has included many aspects. For example, practising calligraphy could improve one's artistic accomplishment and sometimes, calligraphy could be a supplementary approach to creating different characters. Calligraphy and the traditional opera both have the origin in traditional Chinese culture and the images of them are the same. In this respect, both of them present the art of "lines", which request the rhythm, the dynamics, the mellow and the density. In addition, both of them are associated with "chi", which is related to the breath. "Chi" interacts as both cause and effect, which could bring out the best in the two artistic expressions. When it comes to art form, the beauty of neutralization and balancing appears in both categories, which makes the spiritual interpenetrating and mutual promotion between the two of them possible.
