According to semantics and grammaticalisation of "DOU" and "YE", this paper categorizes "DOU" as "DOU1",DOU2",DOU3" and "YE" as "YE1","YE2" and "YE3" respectively. An analysis of the sentence patterns of "DOU" and "YE" in terms of syntax,semantics and pragmatics leads to the conclusion that it is the semantic meaning not the sentence pattern that decides the feasibility of the interchangeability of "Dou" and "YE".Next, the paper studies the regular pattern of co-occurrence of "DOU" and "YE" by analyzing theoretically possible co-occurrence forms of "DOU" and "YE" and language material in CCL language data bank.Finally, the paper investigates the acquisition of "DOU" and "YE" by foreign students learning Chinese as a second language. Based on an analysis of textbooks and writing errors of students, suggestions for teaching "DOU" and "YE" are made.
