Not only the distinct difference between the cultures of Chinese and the West, but also the unique times of their life inevitably determine Guan Hanqing and Shakespeare's tragedies are different. Guan Hanqing lived under the traditional Confucian ideology and culture, and influence by it deeply, in addition, the times of his life is full of national oppression and humiliation, so his tragedies expressed necessarily the great tribulation for the common people who lived in the bottom of society, and their fight for the misery. Shakespeare lived in the "Elizabeth" era which is full of rising Humanism, and people are up-and-coming. Therefore, Shakespeare's tragedies is full of heroic spirit of the great men, they are not afraid to fail, even if life is not exist, they did not fear.The main subject of my dissertation is on the base of text to research, by comparing the tragic figure, tragic conflict, tragic ending between Guan Hanqing and Shakespeare's tragedy, I will analyze similarities and differences between Chinese and Western Tragedy. And the purpose of my paper is to explore the spirit of tragedy which has unique Chinese characteristics, and perfecting the theory of Chinese tragedy. Based on our study, we can reflect the defect in the Western tragedy theory by comparing it with Chinese tragedy. Furthermore, we can complement the theories of tragedy between Chinese and Western culture.Thesis is divided into four parts,which are discussed including the introduction - brief description of the value of Guan Hanqing and Shakespeare's comparison study, and Introduction about Research Status of Shakespeare and Guan Hanqing, and methods of this paper.Chapter I: Guan Hanqing and Comparative Study of Shakespeare's tragic figure. This chapter discusses two ways to start. (1) tragic figure differences in social status and its composition environment: Characters in Guan Hanqing'work are playing in the unimportant characters living in civilian society, the humble people, and Shakespeare's tragic characters are living in the high court of Great. (2) The tragic fate of the characters and the differences in the composition mode of resistance in different forms: Guan Hanqing plays in the tragic figure to take a Tolerance approach to resist unjust fate, appearing in Shakespeare's work are the great characters which suffer strongly protest disaster.Chapter II: Guan Hanqing and Comparative Study of Shakespeare's tragedy of the conflict. This chapter will focus on the causes of the tragedy, tragic reversal of the structure, the consistency of tragic conflict resolution, three aspects of the tragic conflict in western difference and similarities were compared. (1) the causes of the tragedy: the tragedy of Shakespeare derived from human conflict, Guan Hanqing tragedy stems from social conflict. (2) reverse the structure of tragedy: the tragedies by Shakespeare into reverse and then into the death of Shun, Guan Hanqing tragic turn in the final outcome was not death, but into the good times. (3)The consistency of tragic conflict resolution - a historic and moral progress.Chapter III: Guan Hanqing and Comparative Study of Shakespeare's tragic ending. Shakespeare's tragedies to bring people the outcome of the purification of the soul, Guan Hanqing tragic ending is playing the role of moral probation, Both played the role of spiritual comfort.Conclusion: Although there are differences in tragic character portrayal as well as tragic conflict development between the East and the West, the inner spirit quintessences are basically the same, pacifying human soul to some extent...
