Culture Type Fung Yu-lan Said Commentary

In modem China, the discussion about the Chinese and Western culture, centering on the historical subject where is the Chinese culture going was consistent. Feng Youlan hold that it was neither justified nor practical to get the theory of total westernization and partial westernization and the Chinese native culture produced in the view of observing the Chinese and Western culture in individual point of view. This paper, in four parts, discusses about Feng Youlan theory of the cultural type. The first part illustrates the historical background of the form of Feng Youlan theory of the cultural type, pointing out that his theory was born in the historical atmosphere of the Chinese and Western culture discussion which was in the company of the serious national disaster and the huge social innovation. The second part discusses about the forming process of Feng Youlan theory of the cultural type and its theoretical basis, aiming at proving that Feng Youlan theory of the cultural type was on the basis of its long-standing Chinese and Western culture comparative work and philosophical creation. The third part stresses on the connotation and essence of the theory of the cultural type, pointing out that Feng Youlan observes the Chinese and Western culture in the view of generality, believing that the Chinese and Western culture respectively belonged to two cultural types and the development direction and road of the Chinese culture lie in the changed from the cultural type of household industry to that of social industry which is realized through the industrial revolution, but what was sorry was that this is the road of freedom of China going to the capitalism. The fourth part gives the brief analysis on the theory of the cultural type, believing that the historical requirement and development tendency of Chinese culture going to modernization which was shown in Feng Youlan theory of the cultural type, possesses its progressive significance, but because of his non-scientific understanding of the relationship between generality and special and his incapability of carrying out the historical materialism ,his theory of the cultural type couldn answer the historical subject of modern China here is the Chinese culture going...
