Field dependence-independence is of great importance to individual's mental development, so it has been studied frequently by worldwide psychologists. In I 980s, this theory was introduced into our country by Zhang [Toucan and since that, a lot of good research has been done. The present study is to explore the characteristics of junior middle school students?field dependence-independence by using Embeded Figures Test developed by Witkin and revised by Song Heyi. Besides, 80-8 Scale was administrated to the subjects to uncover the relationship between field dependence-independence and the nerve function. After 622 junior students was tested, results are as follows : (1) junior middle school students?field dependence-independence is developing with their aging, but the speed of boys?is different from girls'. (2) there is no gender difference in junior middle school students?field dependence-independence; (3) the nerve function of field independent students is stronger than the dependent ones; (4) junior middle school students?field dependence-independence is positive correlated with their learning performance. This study will offer great help to the guide for students?performance and to the school. mental consultation and therapy.
