Avant garde is a group of writers appearing in the Chinese literary circle in the mid and late 1980's. Under the banner of formalism, these writers initiated a revolution in the approach of narration and attempted to overthrow the traditional literary concept in order to restore language-m-itself. The representatives of Avant garde include MaYuan, Yu Hua, Su Tong, Ge fei, Ye Zhao-yan, Bei Cun, Sun Gan-lu, Pan Jun etc. This thesis comprises a systematic study on the transmutation process of the literary works of avant-gardes, which can be divided into three stages: "formalism", "neo-historicism fiction" and "reality writing". In addition, the correlation between each stage is another focus of this thesis. This paper originated with the view that the transmutation process of avant-gardes is a natural -evolution, which indicates their development from enthusiastic literary revolutionists to mature and calm humanists.Formalism has made an unprecedented exploration into the potentiality of novel writing. On the one hand, it broads the horizons of novel writing, on the other hand, it turns out to be the intangible shackleson the avant-gardes. However, with the emergence of "neo-historicism fiction ", the baptism of economic reformation and the adjustment of the literary orientation, avant-gardes threw off the restriction of the formalism in the 1990's and return to "reality writing" and humanism, which can be considered as their rising from ashes. The thesis points out the significant status of Avant garde in the literary circle through a comparison between the Chinese and western literature. It also analyzes the achievement and disadvantages of avant-gardes and raises the new requirements for their development in the new century.
