This paper focuses on the variability of the painting style of Ding Yunpeng, Wu Bin, Cui Zizhong, and Chen Hongshou, four selected figure painting artists in particular of the late Ming Dynasty. After disclosing the characteristics of their varied style of painting, which are determined by the aesthetic conceptions and the social psychological traits in a specific society, this paper approaches and analyses the characteristics of this variability in its form and structure and the respective presentation of their individual character from four aspects: the traits of line drawing, the composition of lines, the characterization of figures, and the art of composition. The author concludes that the variability of their painting style has enriched the artistic language of the traditional Chinese painting and exerted great influences on the art circle of the late Ming Dynasty and has served as an important foundation of the development of the figure painting in modern times as well as in the Ming Dynasty.
