The modal particles in the novel are abundant, but they have never been studied according to the available research materials and even the content in it has rarely been cited as examples to illustrate the development of modal particles in Ming and Qing Dynasty. Hence, it is significant work to study them. This thesis classifies these modal particles into different groups according to their frequency of use and their historical development tendency after having counted the main modal particles in the former 50 chapters (the first volume) thoroughly. It makes a meticulous description and analysis on the modal particles in the novel and a proper chronic comparison. In the thesis, the usage of every modal particle has been discussed mainly from the aspect of pragmatics and most have studied their origins and late development. The purpose is to display the comprehensive use of the modal particles in the late 16th century and the early 17th century and to clarify the development and formation of the modal particle system. At the same time, the research work can provide certain data for the study of Chinese history and the further study of this novel. It has been found in the research that several main modal particles in modern Chinese had had their original forms, which played the main role in the use of all the modal particles in the period when the novel was written, but these original forms were not definitely the final ones. The numerous and complicated status of use of modal particles in Song and Yuan Dynasty generally came to an end in this period and the modal particle system gradually became simplified. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Journey To The Western Ocean, modal particles, modal, historical origin | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
