Hang Tingjian was a famous poet and calligrapher in Beisong Dynasty, he had been unique in his style of making poems, and enjoyed equal popularity as Su Shi did. Su Shi and Huang Tingjian were called together as" Su, Huang". In addition, Huang was enthusiastic in guiding young poets and had recruited many students, therefore, he was regarded as the Master of Jiangxi Poets Group. Only in terms of influence, Huang had even surpassed Su Shi.While, there have always been some reviewers against Huang's poems since Song Dynasty. They mainly criticize Huang's fondness of allusions and unusual words. It seems there is conflict between this kind of criticism and Huang's poetics: actually, he himself had stated much views anti ornate style, but advocated an ordinary, simple and natural style. Currently, a typical explanation on this conflict is that: although Huang hoped to adjust the two different groups of poetics, one for rhetoric, skills; the other for liberty, integration, but he failed in his trying, and he still shrew his favoritism to the former one. This paper deems that this explanation still needs rectification and further discussion. This paper consists of four part as follows:I. The origin of Huang Tingjian's ideology and his poetics: studying on the main influential factors in his growth; the poetic heritage he got from his predecessors, his status and effect on the transition of poetry style from Tang to Song.II. The development of HTJ's poetics and his ideal of making poems: It was mainly in the late Yuanyou period as Huang was demoted and exiled when he made many friends with young poets and he guided them in making good poems. That time just coincided with the period when Su Shi was exiled to the South of Five Mountains. Instead of Su Shi, Huang had taken up the leadership status in the poet circle. "Unusual", "Creation" are the main tone of his poetics; while, in his later period, Huang returned back to flat style. The development of Huang's poetics could be summarized as: from focusing on regular style to emphasizing changes; from obeying rule of rhetoric to breaking away from it.III. The relationship between Huang's poem creation and his poetics in his later period: those poem works in his later years expressed some deep thinking and profound emotion with easy words. They actually were the successful samples of following Tao Yuanming's poetry style. In that period, Huang's works of poem and his poetics chimed very well.IV. Summary and analysis on the characteristics of Song Dynasty's poem, pointing out the unavoidable historical change fro Tang to Song style, and stating out that Huang's historical status in this change.Based on the above study, this thesis has drawn up the following conclusion:1. Hang Tingjian had made most of his poems which amounted to more than 1,800 before his age of 49, the year of the Eighth of Yuanyou Period. Comparatively, his poems made in his later year did not received much attention. There even is a kind of view that those poems are not so good, and are unmatchable with Su Shi's poems. Actually, after Shaosheng Period, on one hand, Huang Tingjian used much of his energy training and education young poets, on the other hand, his works displayed a different style from hisprevious one, the saying of he had used up his talent is not that right.2. Most of Huang's significant points of poetics were written in his middle and old age at that time he was either in the course of managing funeral or was demoted and exiled to Qianzhou and Rongzhou areas. The essence of Huang's poetics is : A. Unusual, creative, surpass older generations and unique in his own style; B. Following Tao Yuanming and some of Du Fu's poem making examples, Huang created some poems without the restriction of rule of rhetoric, these poems were rich in thought but with flat and easy words. Huang Tingjian's especial keenness on Tao Yuanming's poems should further be noticed. C. According to Huang Tingjian, the best method of compose literature works was to read extensively Confuci...
