Within the field of modern Chinese language studies, research in the valency of verbs is one of the major topics of discussion from the early 80s to the end of 90s of the 20th century. However, studies on the problem of valency in grammar studies in China remain comparatively unsystematic and theorists in this respect hold divergent points of view, thus leading to the underdevelopment of the studies of valency of modern Chinese language. In consequence, no systematic study has been as yet. This paper, drawing on the achievements of the predecessors by making an analysis of the grammar of valency in the light of the linguistic facts of modern Chinese language, aims to probe further into the features of this branch of linguistic studies and to generalize the inherent laws of the grammar of valency so that it can help add some references to the systematic study of the grammar of valency. This paper mainly focuses on the following five points:(1) The historical development of the studies of valency;(2) The categorization of the studies of valency and the characteristics;(3) The principles to define the valency of verbs;(4) Description of the grammatical characteristics of trivalent verbs;(5) Application of theories of the grammar of valency in the analysis of the grammatical and semantic characteristics of sentence patterns that have relevance to trivalent verbs.
