Intellectuals Suspended

This thesis probes the 1990s novels about intellectuals in respect of identity, and refers to the state of intellectuals' existence with "suspend". Thus we try to discuss the intellectual's question in reality through the literature images.In 1980s works, intellectuals experienced the changed identities from people to beginner to identity suspecting to gray crowd. In 1990s intellectuals banishing themselves became more obvious. This thesis announces the characteristic that intellectuals' identities are suspended in consumption society though the contrast of the traditional intellectuals and the postmodern ones. Both the traditional intellectuals who struggle between the tradition and the reality and the postmodern ones who banish themselves show that although the intellectuals have come down from the center position, they cannot become the masses and they can return and depend on neither of the identities. This situation should be come from the great change of the society. In the consumption society, on one hand the consumption culture deprived the intellectuals' words right. Onthe other hand the postmodernism theories made them give up their duty and made them alienate in the common custom. So how the intellectuals stand fast at their duty? This thesis does some discussion on it. First they should clear their identity and stand on the edge of the society. Second they should dare face to the reality. Third they must respect the independent character of knowledge and pursue pure knowledge. At last they should participate in the society with the consciousness of teaching beginners at the same time.The intellectuals become more and more ripe in the adjust of identities since 1980s. The pluralism in 1990s will contribute intellectuals to making a thorough review on themselves and see clearly their precise position between the government and people.
