The current tried to built a native emotional intelligence model and develop a questionnaire which can be applied to study Chinese undergraduates' emotional intelligence so that to provide theoretical foundation and instrument for mental health education and psychological counseling.The current study reviewed the history of the concept of emotional intelligence. It focused on introducing several important emotional models and scales and comparing the tested results of these scales.The current study tried to build a more reasonable emotional intelligence model on the basis of above research. This model had four dimensions, namely tell and understand emotions, express emotions, manage emotions and utilize emotions. Then the study devised a questionnaire according to this model. After two pilot studies, the study generated a 55-item questionnaire using factor analysis technique. This questionnaire has 5 dimensions, which are tell and understand emotions, express emotions, manage emotions and utilize emotions and develop emotions. The current study implemented a large-scaled test with the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire. Data (N=495) for this study were collected with the questionnaire from undergraduates in several universities in Shanghai. Results indicated that: 1. Subjects of different gender, school and grade have significant differences both on some subscales and the total score of the emotional intelligence questionnaire. Furthermore, the scores of the students who were engaged in social work were significantly higher than those who were not. 2. Undergraduates' Emotional intelligence is uncorrelated with their academic achievement. 3. Emotional intelligence can be improved. Parents, teachers and counselors can offer help and suggestions flexibly according to the students' peculiarities and encourage them to have more contacts with different kinds of people.
