This article is a research about Zhang Bi, a cursive hand calligrapher in the earlyMing Dynasty, and the kernel of it is to discuss the causes of the forming of Zhang Bi'scursive hand style. Firstly, this article approaches Zhang Bi's theory of calligraphy andthe causes of its forming by investigating his association with Chen Xianzhang, LiDongyang, and the forerunners of Wumen School, such as Li Yingzhen, Wu Kuan, andShen Zhou, and by analyzing his teachers and other relative elements. Secondly, thisarticle analyzes the source, artistic character and historical value of Zhang Bi's works,and stresses his importance in the transformation of calligraphy styles from the early tothe middle Ming Dynasty.
