World War I And The Development Of China's Cotton Textile Industry

The development of Chinese cotton textile industry during the First World War time was unprecedented, which undoubtedly promoted the modernization of Chinese society. During that time, the situation of Chinese cotton textile industry had reflected simultaneously the common properties of the light industry and its specific characteristics. There is a good deal of controversy on the study for the reasons of the development. This thesis chooses the topic, on one hand, because the development of the industry at that time was extremely remarkable, which had the academic value, on the other hand because up till the present moment, the development has been one of the basic industries of Chinese national economy which are the chief branches for exit, and it was the First World War that the most important turning was realized, which had also realistic meaning.This thesis contains four parts: the general situations of Chinese cotton extile industry during the First World War, the peculiarities of the department, the chief causes of this industry and the influence of it during that time. The research result discovers the general situations of this department are outstanding, including the extension of the cotton yarn market, the establishment of the center of Shanghai for the industry in the country, the active investment of Chinese merchants. There were so many causes for the change of compared superiorities, the influence of the First World War, the support of the policy and the promotion of the nationalism. The development has positive and negative influence, and much of it was so far-reaching that it has been affecting nowadays. All in all, this thesis tries to find some regulations through the research of the development of the cotton textile industry during the First World War, and tries to be benefit to the research of Chinese modern industrial history, at the same time in order to provide relevant data for our light industry.
