The Book of Songs is the most time-honored collection of poems and songs in China. It had been making a great positive role in the unification and development of Chinese spoken & literary language with its rich and colorful words and phrases which were abundant of lofty technique of expression. It had attracted great attention of the linguists through the ages to deliberate the words and phrases in the The Book of Songs. But even to this day there is no comprehensive research on the great quantity of adjectives in it. To have an overall classification and analysis of the adjectives in the The Book of Songs will be favorable to reveal the development of the adjectives in the Chinese language and the characteristics of Pre-Qin period language. What's more , it may provide reference materials for the study on the developing history of the Chinese vocabulary. A further study based on the predecessors was made in this paper. We have completed tentatively the systematic statistics of the adjectives in The Book of Songs, and all of them were classified to two categories , which were so called the monosyllabic adjectives and the disyllabic adjectives. For some controversial questions, such as the special words like 'you'(有),'qi'(其)which often appeared before or behind the adjectives, we listed out here our own superficial opinions. The paper consists of 5 chapters. The preface gave out a brief account of the characteristics of the language in The Book of Songs , the present situation and the value of further studying on the adjectives. In the second chapter, a standard was made on how to confirm the adjectives in The Book of Songs , and according to this ,we had an all-round induce and statistics. In the following two chapters, the semantic meaning, grammar and practical use of all kinds of adjectives in The Book of Songs were discussed. The conclusion was enumerated in the fifth chapter, summarizing the characteristics of all different adjectives in The Book of Songs . And it also indicated a brief analysis on the relation of historical continuity between the adjectives in The Book of Songs and the contemporary Chinese. The Table of The Adjectives in The Book of Songs and the Table of Historical Continuity between The Adjectives in The Book of Songs and Contemporary Chinese were appended after the main body of the paper.
