In the 17th.c Netherland, the political disputes caused by the religious reform resulted in the artistic disputes. Rubens' art shows the Flemish Baroque style of the southern Roman Catholics;while Rembrandt's represents the Dutch realistic style of the northern new religion. The different art styles caused by the religious disputes are showed clearly in their paintings and especially in "The Descent from the Cross". This paper makes an analysis and comparison between the paintings of Rubens and Rembrandt under the same religious title "The Descent from the Cross" through the background of the religious reform of the 17th c by using the methods of comparison between the history and culture, iconology and art form language etc. The paper analyzes the different religious backgrounds and the different creating ideas of the two artists, which is based on lots of concerning facts and data, and analyzes and compares the two works in great detail their differences and shows the different attitudes and interpretation of the two artists toward the Bible in Roman Catholic and new religion. This paper is to search and study the two artists' strong difference in expressing themselves by using their own unique language.
