At the beginning of human beings, religions came into being. So did art. Art is beauty and "beauty is the name of God." Therefore, a intimate relationship between art and religion is apparent. Christianity, one of the three major religions in the world, has been giving a wide and far-reaching impact on the history of human society. There are many factors influencing European schools and art education, among which Christianity has been playing an exceedingly significant role. Through objective and level minded analysis, this article will especially focus on the promotion that Christianity brought to European art education. With a positive attitude, Christianity has been taking part in the process of building up European civilization, of which it started the European art education. With the spirit of love and equality, Christianity exerted great effort on establishing schools, which immediately or indirectly fostered and boomed public and female education in Europe and perfected educational forms. Church is the earliest and primary sponsor of art and the Bible provides artists with the source and inspiration for creation. With great compassion, Christianity devotes itself to the purification of human souls, so it's also the promoter of the development of European art education. In the education-oriented art education, church being an enormous and magnificent art museum, makes every one that comes to it intoxicated. When preachers are preaching biblical principles, unconsciously they are playing the role of art teachers. As a major course, art curriculum was set up in universities, meanwhile, professional art schools and seminary art schools emerged and the earliest record about art was kept. The study about middle ages and mediaeval art is prosperous, but the study about the influence of Christianity of mediaeval European art education is scarcely mentioned. Since there are not many relevant works or essays, this article will specifically focus on the mediaeval art, hopefully through which this opinion could arouse attention in this field.
