The Second Chinese Character Simplification Project was published in December, 1977, and was banned by the State Department in June, 1986, the failure of which caused certain confusion in the usage of characters. The thesis aims to analyze the reasons for the failure of The Second Chinese Character Simplification Project by surveying principal theories of Chinese character simplification, and reviewing the history of the simplification. The main part of the thesis will concentrate on the analysis of the form, sound, meaning of the second simplified characters and exploring the origin, evolvement and theories of the Chinese characters. Nevertheless, the Program of Chinese character simplification should be carried on. Simplification dose not change the quality of Chinese characters, so Chinese characters will not lose its advantage and disadvantage. The basis of Chinese character simplification varied throughout history, sometimes strong, sometimes weak, however it should be reasonable.2. brief review of Chinese character simplificationChinese characters keep changing from its naissance.
