| This thesis analyzes the beauty of horror on the basis of aesthetics and literary psychology, with the supporting examples in the psychological horror stories of Edgar Allan Poe.The thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the background of the subject, the thesis statement and the method of research.Chapter Two expounds and proves that horror is a form of aesthetic experience from the angle of aesthetics, the aim of which is to build a theoretical basis for the beauty of horror. First of all, this chapter expounds the beauty of horror from the aspect of the aesthetic experience. Then, the thesis analyzes two theoretical origins of the beauty of horror: the theory of sublime and the theory of tragedy. In the end, an aesthetic definition is given to horror on the basis of the above argument.Chapter Three analyzes the embodiment of the beauty of horror in the psychological horror stories of Edgar Allan Poe. The first section of this chapter studies Poe's importance in the history of horror literature, and briefly introduces his aesthetic thoughts, in order to explain why his psychological horror stories are chosen as the examples for the study of the beauty of horror. The second section classifies his psychological horror stories into several themes, and briefly introduces the corresponding forms of the beauty of horror of each theme.
