Sergey Rachmaninov, a Russian composer in the Late Romantic, composed a large amount of pieces in his life. The most famous solo piano composition is Twenty-Four Preludes. His preludes do not contain improvisation, and here the lively pictorial images are shown: the large prairie, the birch forest, and images with the Russia style. The aim of the essay is to help the performer have a deeper understanding of the Rachmaninov's preludes to know well and perform the pieces through the analysis of the composition background, music form, rhythm, harmony, and texture.The essay mainly analyses No 2, Op 3 and Op 23 (totally ten pieces) in Twenty-Four Preludes in the aspects of Rachmaninov's life and compositions, the headspring and development of the prelude, the composition background of Rachmaninov's preludes, detailed analysis of these pieces aforesaid, key points in piano performance, and characteristics of composing, and the writing style. Finally, the teachers and learners will understand Rachmaninov's preludes, in two aspects of teaching and performance. This essay will push the development of the piano composition and teaching in the country, which is the aim of this essay.The chapter four and chapter five are the significant parts.
