This dissertation is an investigation with focusing on Dongsheng Shadow Play Troupe, a rural shadow play troupe from Qianxi County, Hebei Province. The troupe was observed within the local rural society from early 1980s to now. The main clue of this article is the status and changes of the shadow play culture in the process of local industrialization. The article describes the rural troupe which is in a changing social background from an agricultural society to a mining industrial society, and then to discuss the intangible cultural tradition in the course of industrialization.The main survey method of research in this article is field study. Gathering and analyzing the first-hand information from field study is the main job of the article writing. The timeline contains 25 years in total, which spreads from the year 1982, when Zhou Zhi Sheng was under contract to manage the troupe, to now. Three time points of the troupe's past and current life -early and middle 1980s, middle 1990s and present - were pointed out to compare the circumstances and problems it's been facing to. The interaction between the troupe and the local society is the main content. To recognize and understand local people's life, thinking, requirement and wish in this special period and then find out how the social changing affected the troupe. The conflict of industrialization and intangible cultural tradition is the focus of this dissertation.
