In the history of western music in nineteenth century, it was obviously that Wagner and his music drama has an important influence. But"music drama"can not include all of Wagner's music works. Before those great works like"Der Ring des Nibelumgen", some operas of other kind had been written by Wagner. They were written in the middle period of Wagner's creative experience. There is so great aesthetic value in these works that up to now they have been still performed on the stage over the world,and most of them has a important sense to Wagner's music and art ideal. And"The Flying Dutchman"is the typical one in all of them. As far as what is wanted to be expounded in this thesis, the analysis to"The Flying Dutchman"can tell the truth that what kind of aesthetic value there is in this opera and how Wagner's ideal about music and drama come true step by step.In this thesis, the analysis to the music and script of this opera are the foundation of the author's viewpoints, linking with the experience of the creation of the work and Wagner's ideal about music and drama. The special sense in this work to Wagner's music drama should be brought to light.The full thesis is divided into four chapters. In the first part, a brief introduction about Wagner's experience all over his life and every opera he has written including his"music drama"are made. His experience of operas writing could be divided into three periods: the early period, which is not ripe enough; the middle period in which opera"The Flying Dutchman"is created and the last period of music drama. In the following two parts is the analysis of the script creation and the musical characteristics of this opera, which is the foundation of this thesis. The plot of this opera and the nature of the script is introduced in the second chapter and the analysis to the important music part in the third one, including the motive, the overture and the typical aria. And in the last part, on the base of music and culture national in color and Wagner's ideal of music drama ,it is concluded that:"The Flying Dutchman"is a special work as far as all of Wagner's works are concerned. First, it is a piece of work that unfolds German opera tradition before our eyes and second ,it is the first step toward Wagner's dream of music drama.
