The Influence Of Female Tragic Consciousness Of Xiao Hong And Zhang Ai - Ling's Creation

Different from the other women authors in the period of "the May 4th Movement", Both XIAO Hong and ZHANG Ai-ling sharedone common characteristic:They were good at expressing on thewomen's tragedy, but focused on different aspects.Both XIAO Hong and ZHANG Ai-ling have experienced similarvicissitudes in their lives: they lacked of parent'saffections as adolescents, and their marriages were full ofdifficulties and reverses. These experiences conduced to theformation of their consciousness about women's tragedy, towhich they had different approaches. In the works created byXIAO Hong, the characters of women's tragedy were often lonely,lived in straitened circumstances, and without expectation ofany men to look after them. They accept these experiencesunavoidable, remained indifferent, without any attempt tochange. In the viewpoint of XIAO Hong, the explorations to thecharacters' attitudes were "the emotional memory of fatalismor having no alternative", which was often unconscious.Contrary to the above description, in the works created byZHANG Ai-ling, the characters of women's tragedy were vulgarwomen full of longings; they took great pains to make life better. But without exception, they all failed and plunged inthe abyss of tragedy. In the viewpoint of ZHANG Ai-ling, theexplorations to these phenomena were "from being maltreatedto maltreating others" or "from women to female slaves"Moreover, they all were aware of their tragedy, but they allvoluntarily became such and such, which was different from thecharacters of women's tragedy created by XIAO Hong.This treatise begins with the different explorations onwomen's tragedy offered respectively by XIAO Hong and by ZHANGAi-ling, and offers some analysis on the works created by thetwo women authors in order to clarify some misunderstandingsamong the readers and to help them correctly understand the twowomen authors and appreciate their works.
