The music drama The Phantom of the Opera, composed and underlaid by Webber and Hart, was shown at Her Majesty's Theatre for the first time in 1986. This opera, as one of the classic operas in the music drama's mature era, achieved a great success for the historical big stage of music drama. It is an opera that has been on show for the longest time and has a biggest body of audience by far. Moreover, it is shown all over the world up to this day, with a box office income of more than $3,000,000,000 and a lot of international awards. However, as to the study of this opera, there are several reviews on some periodicals and magazines and some simple introductions to its content, writing background, commercial achievement, figures and music analyses. Apparently, it is far from being enough for such a classic opera. Its artistic fascination itself has been tested by time and the mass, for it has been put on show for such a long time without any loss of enthusiasm of the audience. This essay firstly_tries to probe further into its related background and artistic expression on the basis of_previous research achievements. Further more, it makes a relatively in-depth analysis on its pursuit for esthetics. Finally, it tries to ponder over the significance of its expansion of voeality.This essay is divided into three parts, all-aroundly systemizing, analyzing and deducing the artistic characteristics of the music drama The Phantom of the Opera from different angles and ensuring the relative integrity of the study. In the exordium part, we have a brief introduction to this music drama, elucidating the difficulties and significance of the study. In chapter one of the text, we begin with the background, content and the process of the inditement of this music drama, mainly analyzing and discussing these parts. In chapter two, we have an exploratory analysis and evaluation for the music of this drama with the due as to horizontally musical paragraph and vertically musical and dramatic structure and the writing techniques of the overall arrangement. Chapter three analyzes the music drama in the macro perspective to find out the holistic trend of the aesthetic style of this drama, beginning with the nature of the mass entertainment and comprehensive art as well as the connotative meaning. In the conclusion part we try to sum up and think over the significance, brought by The Phantom of the Opera, which helps develop music dramas and widen the musical programs of vocality.
