| For students studying European styles of singing, the importance of arias and lieder is virtually equal. Arias are very dramatic and full of character. On the other hand, lieder are delicate and full of poetic feeling. Given these differences, it is difficult to say which one is more important. However, some students cannot tell the difference between lieder and arias, and even sing them in the same way. Lots of works have been published which describe how to perform and understand arias better, but there are few works which analyze the lieder. The reason for focusing on Schubert and shumann's lieder is their great contributions to this style. Each composer has their own originality and achievements. However, they compliment each other especially in the Romantic Doctrine Period. This essay analyze their representative works. It compares the difference between six ways: lyric, melody, piano as accompany part, style, harmony, and perform. Finally, depending upon their different traits, it explores the best ways to present these lieder. |
