Between The "old Land" And "new Life"

The 1980s is the year of "Reform and Opening up" and "Moving towards the world". In the same time, tremendous changes have taken place in China's city and country. It is a significant topic to study the tremendous changes in China's city and country,and the fate of the countrysideyouth. In this historical context. most of Luyao's novels are focused on the topic that the countrysideyouth enter a city. The thesis will take these novels as the analysis object, describe the evolution of the city&country image in Luyao's novels. From the perspective of "the city/country in lirerature" , The thesis will explore that how Luyao understands the city&country,and the relationship between the two.The thesis consists of three chapters. Compared to the country image in the 1950s-1970s'literature.The first chapter analyzes the country image in Rensheng , reveald the casual relationship between the changes of country image and the change of the meaning of"life"of the heroine.In 1950s-1970s'literature,the country is the space that the meaning of"life"can be found;but in the years of Rensheng ,the efforts to eliminate the difference between city and country have been abandoned,so Gao Jialins'meaning of "life" is no longer in the village successfully, but to lead a city life . The second chapter analyzes the novels before "TheOrdinary World", emphatically describe the changes of the city/country image in the novels.The author believed that, Luyao deeply identifies himself with the country/the old land"and its value& emotion. but he simultaneously saw the city/"the new life"is attacking the country strongly. Facing such contradiction, Luyao has devised"the imaginal solution". While we go toward"the new life","the old land"and its emotion &value also should be full of the energy to integrate"the new life".But Luyao quickly understood that, this kind of compromise modernized imagination could not become true. It is nearly the inevitable destiny that"the old land"will be deserted, even if"the new life"is not so happy as imagined.The third chapter analyzes the experience that Sun Shaoping gets into the city and his final fate in "The Ordinary World".Luyao has already painfully saw the inevitable misfortune that"the old land"will be deserted ,but he still attempted, through Sun Shaoping ,to prove that"the old land"owns an important position in"the new life".In fact, Sun Shaoping who maintains the country emotion and also hopes to enter a city is the character which Luyao devises according to he compromises modernized imagination.But finally ,Sun Shaoping was exiled by Luyao.Through Sun Shaoping, Luyao already saw that"the old land"and its emotion& value retreat out of the history step by step Under the oppression of the city...
