Foreign Literature and Art was inaugurated in 1978, just at a time when Contemporary Chinese Literature was at a changing period. The magazine was the first to translate and introduce systematically and in large numbers contemporary western literature, most of which were criticized and banned from publication during the period of Cultural Revolution and also during the period from 1949 to 1966, and which formed the backbone of foreign literature denoted by the concept"modern western literature"that was formed in the specific literary context of the 1980s after"translating and introducing contemporary western literature"was deemed as legitimate in politics.The translating and introducing activities of Foreign Literature and Art (from 1978 to 1980) has constructed the prospect of contemporary western literature for Chinese literature professionals and critics. The"Modern Western Literature"resources, formed on the basis of the translating and introducing activities of Foreign Literature and Art, (from 1978 to 1980) made an impressive impact on Contemporary Chinese Literature, and further influenced its development.This essay reviewed the organization of translating and introducing activities of the magazine, and the shaping function of the magazine on translated literature, by way of analyzing the composition of editors and translators, the preference of translation and introduction, the relationship between the editors and the translators, as well as the strategies used by them. With the magazine as a ?, this essay tried to unveil the transformation of translated literature in the Poly System and the impact the transformation made on the national literature to some extent.The introduction of this essay began with a doubt of an opinion. It made clear that the cause of the transformation of contemporary Chinese literature in the 1980s can not be simply attributed to the"transmutation of literary concept". The exact factor of the transmutation and the specific procedure of the transmutation should rather be analyzed.The first chapter of this essay is a general introduction, which analyzed the literary context and the fundamental characteristic of Foreign Literature and Art at the time of its inauguration, and which served as the basis for further analysis. The second chapter is the analysis of the subjectivity of the magazine, which gives prominence to the influence of editors and translators who gathered around the magazine on translated literature. The third chapter is the analysis of the preference of the magazine in translation and introduction. The prospect of the translated literature of this period was characterized by its humanitarian tendency, which bears relation to the humanitarian debate in the literary community in the 1980s.The conclusion summarized the whole thesis. We can see that, as a , Foreign Literature and Art shaped the prospect of the translated literature by way of organizing translations, which made a great influence on the course of contemporary Chinese literature through further explanation by foreign literature scholars.
