| Reading is a main access to language input for English learners, and it's also one of the important lingual skills that learners need master. Therefore, the study of the use of English reading strategies plays a vital, practical significance for foreign language learning and teaching. Most of the domestic study of college English reading strategies combined the theory and practice, and mainly focused on three aspects in content, including reading strategy training, contrast study, and the relationship between reading strategies and grade. The previous study focused on common undergraduates, several on students in junior colleges, but none about the students in the universities that were upgraded from junior colleges to universities.The research object in this article mainly refers to the institutions of higher learning that were newly upgraded from junior colleges to universities after 2002, examined and approved by Ministry of Education and the Education Department of Henan Province. These universities, which are still at the transition stage, have some general characters with common universities and junior colleges. At the same time, they belong to a special group with their own peculiarities. At present, the study of college reading teaching model in these universities are pressing.This article started from the relevant theories of learning strategies, reading strategies, reading model and reading strategy training, investigated and analyzed the overall state of English reading strategies of non-English majors in Ping Ding Shan University, and revealed the general characteristics, individual differences and issues that exists. Via investigation, the following findings were obtained: 1. the overall frequency scale of reading strategy use of non-English majors in this university was lower; 2. the frequency scale of self-awareness, prediction and repetition strategies was higher than others; 3. the frequency scale of skimming and structure analysis strategies was lower.Based on the findings, experimental classes for the 16-week reading strategy training were chosen. In order to verify the effectiveness of reading strategy training in Ping Ding Shan University, pre-test and post-test were carried out. The design contained control class (Class 1 of Physics) and experimental class (Class 2 of Physics), whose English reading level was the same on the whole according to the result of pre-test. The experiment focused on skimming and structure analysis. Post-test is implemented with the same test paper as pre-test after training. It was verified that the teaching mode of combing the explicit training and class teaching is beneficial to the improvement of English reading level for non-English majors in Ping Ding Shan University.Then,tentative discussion about the results, innovation, implications and limitations were made. Tips about the future study were also offered at the end of this article. |
