In 1930, William Empson, the British famous critics and poet, published his works Seven Types of Ambiguity. In this book, Empson discusses the ambiguity which is the essence of the poetry, which initiates people to ponder this question again. Chinese Ambiguity pays great attention to the implicit, reserved and the not transmitting significance of Poety. It reveals the possibility of differences between the author's intention and the actual intention of the text. Therefore, it has produced esthetic sense like water moon and mirror flower's dim.The late Tang famous poet Li Shangyin's poems are classics of the Chinese classical ambiguity poetry. He used the exquisite expression, the confusing structure to found an enthusiastic, fantasy, strange and enchanting realm. On the basis of the four domestic and foreign translators'versions on the most representative poetries of Li Shangyin's unnamed poems, this thesis reviews the success and failure of translating Li Shangyin's ambiguous poetry into English and tries to analyze the reasons from the perspective of Empson's seven types of ambiguity about English poems. The four domestic and foreign translators are Graham, Bynner, James Liu and Xu Yuanchong.This article divides into three chapters. The first chapter makes a clear of the concept of ambiguity by analyzing the similarities and the differences between Empson's ambiguity and the ambiguity of Chinese classical poetry, which is used to make preparations for the following elaboration. The second chapter discusses the transmission of ambiguity on the point of language. The study is based on the basis of Li Shangyin's unnamed poems and divides into three sections, which discuss about the ambiguity on vocabulary, grammar and the rhetoric separately. The third chapter discusses the ambiguity transmission on the significance and the esthetic sense of Poetry. After analyzing thoroughly, we can comprehend the ambiguity of Li Shangyin's poetry, define clearly the ambiguity essence of Chinese classical poetry and inform its influence on the modern poetry. Analyzing the success and failure in the Chinese-English transmission process and studying its in-depth reason, we can grasp the similarities and differences of ambiguity between China and the West.
