There were two ways for the pre-Qin Dynasty people to understand their living place or even the world: firstly, to understand the world by walking; secondly, by imagination, due to the underdeveloped transportation technology, the latter of which is just the topic of this paper. The imaginative geography, in Vico's theory term, was called "Poetic Geography", which was one kind of "Poetic Wisdom". And in this paper, we will discuss the pre-Qin dynasty's poetic geography, especially through "faraway place imagination".In the first chapter, we will study the reality-related reasons of poetic geography, which was revealed by the discussion of some geographic ideas of pre -Qin dynasty, like "JiuZhou" theory and "JiFu" system. After that, we could conclude that these geographic ideas were in some degrees the result of imagination. In chapter two, we will discuss the spirit meaning of faraway place imagination, and the conclusion is that the "faraway place imagination" has the meaning of spiritual freedom.Due to what reasons, one certain direction was considered to have some certain cultural connation and aesthetic value is the core problem in chapter three.Chinese culture was the production of agricultural civilization, and sea was discussed somewhat subjectively and imaginatively. In the last chapter, we will discuss the sea imagination. In analyzing the discussions about sea of pre-Qin dynasty thinkers, it could be found that it's the unique cultural psyche based on agricultural civilization served as the real cause that why sea presented as "otherness" in Chinese culture.
