In the later creation process, Kenzaburo Oe repeatedly mentions Pseudocouple, which is generally regarded as an important method for his creation. And Pseudocouple is the key for understanding Kenzaburo Oe's later works. Using Changeling as a text, this thesis aims to have a comprehensive analysis on Pseudocouple.Chapter one is an introduction of Pseudocouple which first appears in The Unnamable, one of Samuel Beckett's works. Inspired by Beckett, Kenzaburo Oe put forwards his own Pseudocouple. Moreover, he writes an appendix for his three later works, titled the conversation between Kogito Tyoukou and the author which is in the form of Pseudocouple as well. Pseudocouple has various forms. From Changeling to Goodbye, My book, Pseudocouple, as a creation method, is well-used in Kenzaburo Oe's works.Chapter two has a detailed analysis on the text Changeling. Changeling has drawn its material from the suicide of his brother-in-law and best friends. However, it breaks free from the restrictions of individual novel by employing the structure of folk tales and cartoon. And by using the structure of cartoon, the intertexuality is clearly showed in this work and it also ingeniously reveals that Gorou is the changing child, and Kogito and Gorou are living in two different worlds. In order to achieve the successful communication between these two people from two different worlds, Kenzaburo Oe employs the structure of"Tortoise System"in his narration. From this we can see that Pseudocouple is clearly represented in Changeling.Chapter three is an analysis of Pseudocouple as a kind of relationship between persons. The relationship between the main characters and their prototype in Changeling will be discussed. Through the analysis of the influence of"that event"on Pseudocouple, the author attempts to illustrate the theme of self-redemption in Changeling. This thesis uses Pseudocouple as an entry point and analyzes its maturity in Kenzaburo Oe's works. Using Changeling as a text, this thesis aims to have a comprehensive analysis on Pseudocouple. Through pseudocouple, the theme of self-redemption that Kenzaburo Oe pursues in his later works can be clearly explained.
