Liu Xinwu is a cross-type writer in the contemporary Chinese literary circle, whose works have ignited tremendous discussion. This paper is a study on the time and space in Liu Xinwu's novels. Taking time and space as a breakthrough point, the paper is aimed to probe into the unique image of time and space in his novels. The first chapter is an interpretation to the image of time. The shift from the aspiration of speed and efficiency to the pursuit after the special sense of history, which is shown through the anxiety disorder of time in the process of modernization, shows a conversion of his writing from society-based to individual-based.The second chapter is an interpretation to the image of space. The praise to those ordinary people living in quadrangles, together with the critique to those reprobate intellectuals living in the meretricious cities, reveal the author's confusion about the cities under transition period, and his attachment to the days gone by.The third chapter is an interpretation about the transitions between time and space in Liu Xinwu's novels. So many spaces produce the genre-painting style chronoscope, which revealed his complicated feeling about Beijing, who is on its way of modernization. The conclusion summarize the conversion of the concept of time and space in Liu Xinwu's novels, and point out the reasons of this kind of conversion. The writer obtained materials from the contemporary society of China, and his works record the transitions of society. Therefore, for the Chinese literature which is shifting from new period to transition period, those works are of great value.
