The dissertation compared the spatial metaphors expressions of Chinese and Korean bas ed on the orientational metaphors theory of cognitive linguistics in order to find the differe nces and similarities of the way of thinking between Chinese and Korean. In this dissertat ion,the author compared the spatial metaphors in 'quantity, status, time, scope, soci al relations' etc.Through the comparison, the authors found that they are very similar in many levels. The reason for this is that the two countries' people have bee n living in the same cultural circle for a long period and the same cultural practices have formed based on those experiences. Those same cultural practices have potentially played a v ery important role in this linguistic phenomenon. And used '上下前后'as example s to introduce symmetric and asymmetric mapping in Chinese and Korean metaphors. Also the auth or has tried to find the reason for this linguistic phenomenon. Then,in this dissertation the author combined the comparison results of Chinese and Korean spatial metaphors wit h foreign language study. To learn varieties of metaphor expressions would b e a great way to expand vocabularies.Through the analysis of error caused by asymmetric mapping of metaphor expressions, the author triedto find methods to reduce this kind o f error in vocabulary study.
