In general sense, the image analysis in literary theories focuses on typical individuals for preference while images in the domain of Comparative Literature refer to the "exotic" image. The image is representation of individuals or collective with objective and subjective elements integrated with cultures and emotions. This article will analyze Lost Horizon by James Hilton from the angle of view of imagologie with "Shangri-La" as the theme, in order to approach the construction of this Utopian image and find out personal, social, historical causes.This thesis is divided into three chapters:The first chapter "James·Hilton and Lost Horizon" will introduce Hilton's life and educational backgrounds and his composition experiences, especially the publication of Lost Horizon and its social response, aiming at promoting domestic readers' comprehensive and coherent understanding of this productive novelist.ChapterⅡ"Designation of China's Image in Lost Horizon" will analyze specifically the designation of "Shangri-La" created in Lost Horizon. And the existence of an independent world, the purity of the natural environment, quiet and harmonious philosophy of quiet and harmonious life together ad constitute a vision of the East as "the other" in the eyes of the West.ChapterⅢ"Shangri-La—Construction of Utopia" will, from both horizontal and vertical dimensions, discuss various causes for the formation of Utopian Shangri-La. The horizontal dimension refers to how major factors in personal, social and economic aspects of a particular historical period perform in the interactivity between "the other" and "I" as an observer and speaker. The vertical dimension refers to tracing to source to explore tradition of shaping China into Utopia in western literature and its development.
