Chinese arts & crafts has a long history with the unique intension in the world. Several representative versions on the systematic Chinese arts and crafts history have been published since 1950s, That is, The Brief History of Chinese Arts & Crafts edited and published by College of Central Arts & Crafts and People's Arts & Crafts Publishing House in 1983, The History of Chinese Arts & Crafts written and published by Mr. Tian Zibing and Shanghai Knowledge Publishing House in 1985, The Brief History of Chinese Arts & Crafts written and published by Mr. Long Zongxing and Shanxi People's Arts & Crafts Publishing House respectively in 1985, The History of Chinese Arts & Crafts written and published by Bian Zongshun, Zhouxu, Shi Yuzhu and Chinese Light Industry Publishing House respectively in 1993. The publishing of these works constructs basic platform to the research and writing of Chinese arts & crafts, forms the basic texts of the teaching of Chinese arts & crafts.The paper aims to reveal the intellect systems of Chinese arts & crafts history writing since 1950s and some newly probed value since 1990s through analysis of editing characteristics and perioding method of the versions mentioned above.The research of arts & crafts history undergoes through the following 3 ways: the description and classification of the former arts & crafts, the stating of relation between its development and social development, the proving of laws existing in the arts & crafts development. The paper consists of 3 parts:Chapter 1 overviews the several versions of the Chinese arts & crafts history including the publishing ,writing features and period construction contrasting of college version, Tian version, Long version and Bian version. There exist various kinds of writing styles about the Chinese arts & crafts history, but the basic period style canbe divided into two categories: the one based on the shift of dynasties, the other based on the change of society properties.Chapter 2 explicates some writers'creative research on the history of Chinese arts & crafts. Within tens of years many writers made new attempts to the research on the history of Chinese arts & crafts and have written kinds of textbooks including dynastic history, category history, as well as comprehensive history, either of which is reasonable.Chapter 3 proposes some ideas on the basis of teaching practice of the Chinese arts & crafts history, contrasts self- editing textbooks with present version ones and presents the theoretical curriculum reforming assumptions to the major of art design.For a long time the research of the history of Chinese arts and crafts is carried out combined with the methods of archaeology, bibliography and appreciation of handicrafts, which turned out to be necessary. But as far as the teaching of art design students is concerned, this way is not specially suitable for them. The teaching of the history of Chinese arts & crafts, which is bansed on the comprehensive history, is generally concerned with handicraft classification and masterpieces of different periods, with handicraft materials and technology development, with the characteristics of arts & crafts of different periods, but not much with the design ideology of handicrafts or the relationship between the designed works and people's life. So rethinking the gap may give rise to the new perspective to the teachig of Chinese arts & crafts history to the art design majors.The paper aims to acquire the solution to problem in the teaching of the Chinese arts & crafts history, find more research methods on the Chinese arts & crafts history, and probe mew approach to the Chinese arts & crafts research.
