Modern Chinese Resultative Causative Research

The verb-resultative construction (VR) is one of the most complicate syntactic structures in semantic structure of Modern Chinese. The structure of VR itself not only has its own particularity, its inner structure also has a complicate particularity. Therefore, until now, many scholars have constantly focused on semantic value of VR. Recently, many of dissertations for Doctorate and Master conduct a research on causative meaning from multiple viewpoints. In this thesis, VR is the one of causative structure in Modern Chinese. From the cognitive viewpoint, VR is the one of causative frame, this thesis conducts a frame research of cognitive philology and semantic construction of structural linguistics.Since causative structure of VR is quite complicate, we should concern about the possibility of ambiguity. Ambiguity of VR contains very complicate VR causative category. Based on phenomenon of ambiguity of VR, this thesis study causative structure of VR and semantic particularity, consider acceptability between the types of ambiguity.Through the study on causative structure of VR, we can draw a conclusion:the inner "causative meaning" makes VR to produce ambiguity. The two types of semantic meaning, "autonomous" and "causative", are the two types of explanation on ambiguity.This thesis contains seven chapters, around 5.2 thousand words. DetailedChapter One:Introduction.In the first part of the thesis, motive of study on causative meaning of VR is introduced. Then, theories and research methods, definite framework and object are pointed out respectively.Chapter Two:the context of the research.There are many studies on semantic value of VR and those study obtained good results. This chapter is analyzed in two aspects:(1) Study on VR (2) Study on causative meaning of VR.Chapter Three:The analysis of causative meaning of VR. In this chapter, VR in causative situation is discussed. The semantic compositions of VR are causer, cause, force and result. Classification of factors of causative meaning of VR, specialty and semantic relationships between the factors are discussed. Chapter four:The two types of VR, "autonomous" and "causative". VR shows two types of causative meaning:"autonomous" and "causative". These types are alternative and it just causes ambiguity. In this chapter, external and inner particularity of the two types of causative meaning and possibility of ambiguity are analyzed.Chapter five:Analysis on causative ambiguity of VR.Representative types of VR are found in ambiguous VR. Based on causative structure discussed above, various kinds of ambiguity and its acceptability are discussed.Chapter six:Comparison of Chinese VR and related Korean syntactic structure.In this chapter, two syntactic structures which have same semantic meaning are compared. Then, how Chinese VR is represented in Korean is discussed and we judge whether those Korean syntactic structures have ambiguity or not. Through this analysis, we can find the features of Chinese VR syntactic structures.Chapter Seven:Conclusion.In the last chapter of the thesis, the main points of view and conclusions, distinguished features of the thesis and some issues that deserve further consideration are summarized.
