Artemisia Gentileschi was an Italian Early Baroque painter, today considered one of the most accomplished painters in the generation influenced by Caravaggio. In an era when women painters were not easily accepted by the artistic community, she was the first female painter to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence. In 1612, Artemisia was involved in a judicial case which was brought by her father who accused Agostino Tassi, his colleague, had raped his daughter. Among Artemisia's works, the repetition of The Book of Judith revealed that important period in her life. She always depicted this theme so violently and bloodily that her paints were both the most famous and the most unacceptable ones among all the paints with the similar subject. The contradiction caused by traditional art history and feminist art history when they analyze Artemisia and her works widens and deepens the field of Judith by Artemisia. The analysis of her Judith, the controversial works and also the fruits of her suffered life, is helpful and fatal to complete the construction of personality for this female artist.
