The contemporary writers are always paying attention to the changing times, the suffering and humiliated countryside and the residents who are living in the bottom."The Zhedong local fiction writers"which occurred in the 1920's,"the Beijing fiction"which occurred in the 1930's and"the Potato Fiction"and"the Lotus Fiction"which formed in the 1940's and have developed since our country was founded, which are considered to be the literary genre or quasi-literary genre by the current fiction historians, present various local people, scenes, stories, and customs from all over the country to all of us so that they has greatly enriched the landscapes of the contemporary fictions. During the recent centuries, the works of local fictions and the fates of their authors are ups and downs, having suffered a lot, up to now which causes the literary debates from time to time. This paper deeply explores the reasons for the success of Liu Shaotang, who is devoted to the local fictions, from its themes, characters, structures, etc. , making a proper evaluation on his works and analyzing the impact upon the contemporary local fictions.The article is divided into five parts.The first part is an introduction, an overview of the local fictions, the works of the local fictions of Liu Shaotang, and the comments and research on his works by magazines and other media and points out the principle Liu Shaotang has always stuck to in his creations:"Chinese Style, National Style, local features, and local themes."The second part mainly elaborates on Liu Shaotang's unique themes. This part is divided into two gradations. The first one generally states his proposition that we must deep dig out a well he stuck to as well as the achievements he achieved in his writing practice. It demonstrates his pursuit of aesthetics and the achievements he achieved from particular parts by the analyses of his 40-year-long creations. And it elaborates from writing about the hometown and the farmers and makes the comparison of Liu Shaotang with Hao Ran, Cong Weixi, Wang Meng, Deng Youmei and so on. The second one mainly introduces Liu Shaotang as the representative of the local fiction. He combines the scenery on both sides of the Jingjiao Canal with the folk customs and characters as the main objects of aesthetic effects. In general, this is the general characteristics of his local fictions.The third part explores the characters in his fictions from two types. The second type of the characters reflects his sincere experience and a unique grasp on the female world .The fourth part explores the exquisite structures of Liu Shaotang's local novels. First, as one of the main writers of"the Lotus Fiction", he is deeply affected by Sun Li and gains his creative essence. And his novels are structured like a kind of pose. Then the structures of his novels are specifically dealt with from two aspects on the bases of analyses of his works. On one hand, the love narrative in the novels, the narrative of the daily life and revolutionary history narrative go hand in hand, which causes the complementary interaction and symbiotic co-existence among them. They have similarities but sometimes have slight differences, and their structures have the characteristic of polyphonic. On the other hand, the structure of his works in the pose form is deeply influenced by Chinese classical poetry, prose, legends, novels, dramas, folk tales, and the storytelling, with the storytelling's structure in it.The fifth part is the conclusion. The native customs, the characters and the story are the essential elements of Liu Shaotang's works. However, the practicality, the model, the drawing close to life, the contemplation of the human nature and the popularity but little kitsch are all his essential creative methods. And Liu Shaotang is carrying on the personalized narrative explorations, which is on the way. And his works have the unique national form and national style. Liu Shaotang has made the effective contributions towards promoting our outstanding national literary traditions and the popularization of arts.
