Improving design ability of products is becoming more and more important for enterprises to face the increasing market competition. A large number of information supporting new product design will be produced during the process of using ERR This information is significant to the design decision of product design in accordance with actual resource ability at enterprises from ERRFirstly, on the basis of analyzing information flow in ERP, this paper proposes four catalogues of information deriving from ERP that supports product design, namely market information, workcenter information, BOM information (including material information) & process information, and quality information . The paper argues, that BOM and process information is the most important information supporting product design.Secondly, the paper presents a design process model and analyzes each design stage based on ERP in detail. It is proposed that comprehensive QFD and FMEA is integrated to plan product during conceptual design. In detailed design and process planning, CAD and CAPP is used to ensure that designed products can meet customer's demands and enterprise's real ability considering on the information that the course of conceptual design produced and ERP supported.Thirdly, the design method of ERP system and product design are discussed, the information management platform PDM system which supports product design is introduced. Then, the paper presents systematic frame that ERP supports product design based on PDM. The PDM/ERP essential data interchange interface and the integrating course about product design tools are discussed based on PDM. Finally, the paper proposed two ways realizing the process that ERP supports product design by using CORBA technology.
