Since the end of World WarⅡand the division of the Korean Peninsula., the US's policy toward the North Korea has gone through sharp opposition during the Cold War and Engagement and containment after the Cold War. U.S. administrations had different policy in focus toward the Korean issue and also adopted a different policy instruments. While George Bush's stratagem which attempted to realize reun-ification on the peninsula according to the German unification model had failed, Clinton's administrations focused on the Nuclear and missile issues together with the aim to prevent the nuclear proliferation. But a complete strategy on North Korea had not been formed.. Since the George W. Bush's administration took office, prevention of nuclear proliferation in the Korean Peninsula was also treated as the center task. U.S and N. Korea played a game on the nuclear issue. Yet U.S. North Korea policy has been not only limited to this. Regulatory powers surrounding the peninsula and Coordination of the relationship with its allies has also been taken into account. Though the US policy on the Korean Peninsula constantly adjusted, the real purpose has never changed, that is firmly grasp the initiative in the Korean Peninsula affairs in order to serve the global strategic.This paper begins with the review of the U.S. North Korea policy after the Cold War. Hawk engagement strategy toward North Korea and specific diplomatic practice has been analyzed in detail. Hard-line policy was a prominent characteristic in this period. As the domestic and international situation changed, facing of tremendous pressure, a more flexible and pragmatic policy toward North Korea had been taken during the Bush administration's second term, a more active diplomacy of multi-lateralism had been carried out, ex.'Six-Party Talks',which had achieved some of the results. Bush administration's policy toward the DPRK during this period was the reflection of pragmatism. However, it was still far from the strategic objectives. Bush administration's policy on the Korean Peninsula had always been changing for eight years.This course not only affected US-North Korea relations and North Korea-South Korea relations,but also deeply influenced the secure situation in Northeast Asia and the world security. All of this got the world's attention.
