Since the founding of People's Republic of China, especially since the reform and opening up policy applied, the number of international students who chose studying in China rising rapidly. In 62 years, China received nearly 2 million foreign students studying here. China has a long history covers 5000 years, and has it's own cultural inheritance and customs. Xi'an was settled as capital buy many emperors lots of times in the history, it is a brilliant place who condense the essence of Chinese culture. While American students studying and living in Xi'an, they felt "unadapted" in many aspects. They inevitably encountered many different types of difficulties, including daily living problem, psychological problem, language problem, learning problem, and interpersonal problem, and so on. We are the host of international students, we need to discover and understanding American students' difficulties in time and in-depth, we need to spare no effort to help them solve these tough difficulties. If American students in Xi'an are good, this kind of condition will not only enhance themselves in academic progress, but also improve the international image and higher education level of China. With the increasing number of American students in China, more and more problems surfaced, the study about American students' cross-cultural adaptation in Xi'an becomes a realistic demand. This study attempts to find out American students' cross-cultural adaptation problems while living in Xi'an, follow-up investigate more than twenty American students studying in 5 universities or colleges in Xi'an, using qualitative research such as interviews, observations, discussions and case studies. Introduce their backgrounds and find out the subjective and objective factors which causing cross-culture difficulties, proposes the solution method for dispelling these kind of difficulties.The paper is divided into four parts. The first part introduces the research background; the second part describes the basic information of American students in Xi'an; the third part explains the subjective and objective reasons why they are "unadapted"; the forth part is on the basis of previous parts, summarizes the findings of this research and shows a comprehensive discussion about American students' cross-cultural adaptation, pointing out the directions for future research.
