A Comparative Study On Attack And Defense Efficiency Of Chinese Men 's Basketball Team And Its Opponents In The 17th Asian Games

In the 2014 Inchon Asian Games, the young Chinese men’s basketball leaded by Gong Luming got the result of one win and two losses, ranked No. 5. This is the worst performance since 1974’s Asian Games.Lacking of expericencs is not the only reason that Chinese men’s basketball lost the game. In fact, due to Yao Ming’s retirement, the phenomenon of follow-up team began to emerge out of line, resulting in an embarrassing retreat in China in the realm of basketball. However, the 2014 Inchon Asian Games is a new try for young Chinese basketball players, we should care about the Chinese men’s basketball team growth and the development closely.The object of study is video recordings and technical index of those 12 Chinese men’s basketball players in 2014 Asian Games. By using the method of literature review, logical analysis, video observation, mathematical statistics and comparative analysis, and expert interviews, the paper makes further research of players’ technical statistics and efficiency. Meanwhile, the paper throws an overall analysis of the result in order to find the reasons for the Chinese team’ s failure for reference. Research shows that: 1.Compared to other Asian basketball teams, Chinese team is fairly good one. That is to say, Chinese shot percent of two shots and three shots is high while attacking in the game. At the same time, defense rebounds and shot blocking have superiority in the game, however free throw and steals are not. 2.The Chinese team has the absolute height advantage in the game, while the strength is less inferior. In the intensive body confrontation, Chinese team cannot make full use of its height. Thus, the excess consumption of physical fitness in strength confrontation might leads to the bad outcome in the game. 3.The value of height may contribute a sum in the Chinese inside players while doing the attack, however strikers and isolation players are few in inside players. Most scoring happens because that inside players tries to break the defense or using the second chance to score. After all, the attack is weak in opponents’ basket especially when foul due to the inside strikers. Besides, free throw percentage is very low. 4.There is high correlation between the Chinese steal efficiency value and goal average in the competition. The scoring is very low in Chinese fast break which usually begins with the defense of the board but not with scrambling for the ball.However, Chinese team plays so steady in the defense that they might miss the good steal timing and opportunities of fast attack. 5.There is significant correlation between assists efficiency value and total efficiency value. That is to say, teams need more assisting to improve efficiency value. In short, more assisting can make the team a better performance. 6.Young and inexperienced players are prevalent in Chinese basketball team. They are lack of tactics execution and good psychological quality, which is the explanation why they can easily make a mistake in a contest, not to mention score uncultivated land.
