The natural requirement of earlier modernization (EM) of China's higher education (HE) is to make it scientific, which is realized mainly through introducing western science and technology of modern times. The traditional HE in China is humanity-centered, so the introduced western science inevitably conflicts fiercely with traditional humanities. From the point of culture, the evolution of this pair of basic contradiction (science and humanities) in modern times is cultural thread during the EM of China's HE, which is significant for the research on EM of China's HE.This essay aims at proving that conflicts between science and humanities is cultural thread of EM of HE in China. First of all, author systematizes this thread from two points:ideology and course; then summarizes from several aspects and tries to offer some conducive advice for the reform of China's HE. Apart from introduction, this article is mainly divided into several parts as follows:Part I : Conflicts between Science and humanities is the cultural thread of EM of HE in China.This part proves that the essential peculiarity of EM of HE is to make it scientific. The traditional China's HE, which is Characterized with humanity-center, has serious disadvantages. The conflicts between science and humanities, which results from introducing western science and technology of modem times, is cultural thread during the history course of EM of China's HE. All above is the argument basis of this essay.Part II: Clashes between science and humanities of the HE in the last years of Qing Dynasty.In this part, author systematizes Cultural thread of HE in the last years of Qing Dynasty from two sides (ideology and Course), which is divided into three periods, After this historyperiod, science enters into China's HE in modem times.Part III :Clashes between science and humanities in the kuomintang period.Like part II, author systematizes the cultural thread, which concerning ideology and course, from 1912 to 1920. In this period, science defeated the humanity, and establishes its position in the HE. Thus, China's EM finishes its first step.Part IV. Summaries and Conclusions.1. From the point of ideology, conflicts between science and humanities in China's HE of modem times mainly manifest extreme psychology and electric mediate psychology as far as cultural psychology is concerned.2.Course reformation of China's HE in modem times is to transform traditional humanities course which stresses unification of ancient classics into course mainly concerning western science and technology in modem times.3. The necessity of maintaining the old political order is one of the social basis on which the HE institutions?traditional humanistic education exists. One important aspect of the clashes between science and humanities is the clashes between science and politics, or the advancement and backwardness.4.Development of scientific education in modem China's institution of HE have several obvious characters.Part V: Advice on current HE reform in our country.1 .To strengthen the scientific education in the HE.2.In order to realize the moderation of higher scientific education, we should establish a value system of modern scientific education.3.HE should integrate scientific education and humanistic education.
