There is a debate about what's the character of Chinese education, instrumentalism or humanism? In this thesis, that Chinese education is a cultural process is proposed. The aim of the proposition is to break the theory, which says Chinese education is only a process to get knowledge , and to integrate the instrumentalism and humanism so as to establish a new theory about the individual's integrality and expansibility. The new theory includes two parts: First, Chinese education is not just the course of language training but a process to deliver culture; on the other hand, Chinese education is not just the course to train the skills of languages but to edify and promote the individual's diathesis, which redounds not only to re-understand our Chinese education theoretically but also to reconstruct a reasonable and high efficiency Chinese education system to accelerate the all-round education.In this thesis the author has researched the functions of Chinese education from the point of view of Chinese cultural characteristic. Moreover, the author tries to explore the ways to realize the Chinese education as a cultural process.Culture, as a value system running in the great family, influences on each member. That's, man-who is the main body of culture, creates civilization and acclimatize himself to it. The development of cultures depends on the language symbol systems. Chinese education as a special mother tongue education passes culture to students through students' learning the language, which makes students sense and experience the excellent Chinese culture and help to develop themselves in understanding, accepting and creating cultures.In this thesis , the author has investigated that the cultural character Chinese education originates from the inner attributes of Chinese cultures. There are many reasons for it. First, Chinese characters present the cultural characteristic of Chinese. The direct ideographic Chinese characters not onlyhave powerful functions to unite and spread Chinese cultures but also can exhibit the traditional Chinese cultures from their forms and structures. Second, the cultural character of Chinese is also presented by Chinese expression. The most important characteristic of Chinese is of humanism. Third, Chinese-teaching materials also presents the cultural character of Chinese.As a cultural process, Chinese education has several functions to develop the individuals: 1. To awake students' cultural conscious and stimulate them to pursue the cultures actively. 2. To stimulate the assimilation and acclimation cognitive psychology and perfect students' cognitive structure so as to make them get invaluable knowledge and promote their all-around development. 3. To cultivate students' prides of and enthusiasm for their motherland and mother tongue. 4. To edify and infect students with the unique musical, imagist and emotional beauties of Chinese, and to enlighten and influence students' normal and aesthetic values. 5. To stimulate students' cultural creation behaviors.In this thesis, the author takes the Chinese education as a cultural process, and explores the concrete implement ways: In the first place, the notion of education should turn to humanism. Secondly, cultures should permeate in the course plans. Thirdly, teachings should be such a process as equal dialog among teachers, texts and students. Finally, the cultural process should be projected into teaching strategies. These strategies include: 1) scene-experience; 2) activity-exploring; 3) dialog-exchange; 4) review-reconstruction.
