Vocabulary learning is one of the most important parts in language learning. The obvious difference between the English Curriculum Standards for the senior middle school and the former English Teaching Syllabus lies in the increasing demand for vocabulary. Students are expected to be able to use the words they have learned to express themselves and pass on information. That is doing things with the language. What's more, the English Curriculum Standards particularly emphasizes the teaching of learning strategies to get students to form good study habits and develop their learning strategies effectively in order to lay a good foundation for their future development and life-long learning. But the new words appear in large numbers in the existing textbooks, most of which are quite long and complicated. Students spend a great amount of time memorizing them without much effect. As a result, some students have lost interest in learning English and have little confidence in themselves. On the other hand, teachers feel that the traditional vocabulary teaching methods can not meet the requirements of the English Curriculum Standards. Therefore, it is an project to find efficient strategies for English vocabulary teaching and learning which comply with the new curriculum ideas besides applying the good traditional ones.This research project has made an investigation on 234 Senior students from the two grades of different levels in Beijing Road Middle School in Huaian City. The result of the investigation reveals that the students have a generally low level of using English vocabulary learning strategies especially the metacognitive strategy and resources management strategy. Some of them even use no or very few strategies. An experiment has been conducted on 38 subjects, based on the results of much research on strategies for English vocabulary learning. They are trained to grasp the English vocabulary learning strategies. The result shows that training students to grasp the strategies for English vocabulary learning helps improve their strategies, thus facilitating their English learning and improving their English level. The strategies for English vocabulary learning, as one part of the learning strategies are necessary in English teaching and learning.
