Errors made by learners have long troubled every teacher and are also very common during the process of second language acquisition. The sources of errors are complicated. In recent years, the study of the errors committed by Chinese students in junior schools has increasingly attracted the attention of English teachers in China. Errors Analysis (EA), a branch of Applied Linguistics which is based on Contrastive Analysis (CA), has undoubtedly made great contributions to the study on second language teaching. Obviously, either CA or EA has its merits and weaknesses. A careful study of errors reveals the common problems shared by the language learners, which is believed to be of great help to both language teachers and language learners. This thesis, with the theories of EA and CA as its theoretical guidance, analyzes the errors committed by junior middle students in the author's class. Then, efforts are made to find all the sources of errors. The analysis shows that Interlingual and Intralingual errors are two major types, while transfer is another important source. The author tried to describe and analyze all kinds of errors on spelling, vocabulary, grammar and sentences according to respective sources. Following the analysis and discussion, relevant error correction methods and pedagogical suggestions are put forward in order to help the language learning and teaching.
