Chinese martial art bears a long history. It is a precious cultural heritage gradually accumulated and developed in a long run of the nation's practice of living and fighting. It is also ancient Eastern culture in miniature. Besides, it plays an irreplaceable role in maintaining students'physical and mental health, cultivating students'morality and quality, building up the nation's self-esteem, developing traditional Chinese culture and so on. Since the foundation of our nation, concerning authority has required that martial art must be in the list of compulsory courses. However, martial courses haven't got certain development. It results from several factors, which, in turn, severely affected speed of teaching improvement in the colleges in northern Jiangsu. This article has investigated and analyzed the teaching condition in colleges in northern Jiangsu through referring to books and documents, questionnaire, interviews on experts, statistics and so forth. The conclusions are as follows:1 Leaders of the colleges in northern Jiangsu do not pay enough attention to the development of martial art teaching, which is a crucial factor in that whether martial art teaching will be improved or not.2 The severe lack of martial art field and equipment of the colleges of northern Jiangsu fails to satisfy needs in martial art teaching, which directly and seriously affects martial art teaching effects.3 Thought students have high spirits in learning martial art, teaching contents and forms are relatively monotonous. There widely exists the problem of"more skill, less theory"in which students'interests are ignored. This also does harm to martial art courses in these colleges.4 Martial art teaching materials used by colleges of Northern Jiangsu lag behind the development of modern martial art teaching, which largely discourages students' passion for learning martial art thus affecting teaching effects.5 There exists a lack of reasonableness in the martial art testing system of the colleges in northern Jiangsu for the false belief of"more skill, less theory"is widespread.6 Martial art teachers in the colleges of northern Jiangsu tend to be young while their degrees and titles are relatively low. The proportion of teachers who have higher title is relatively small. Few of them have done enough research, which fails to meet the requirement of the colleges. In order to solve the problems that occur in the teaching process and make further improvement inmartial art teaching of the colleges in northern Jiangsu, the author put forward following solutions: first, college leaders pay more attention to martial art teaching; secondly, collect martial equipment through multiple ways and make the best of attainable field; thirdly, strengthen the force in teaching revolution; fourthly, strengthen the build of teacher and improve teachers'quality; fifthly, write and edit theoretical teaching materials that are more specialized, standardized, united, scientific; sixthly, change tradition evaluation model of martial art teaching; seventhly, apply more modern educational skills in martial art teaching; eighthly, offer more vocational trainings to teachers and better the teaching team; ninthly, create more opportunities for martial art teachers to learn from and exchange with others thus improving teaching quality; tenthly, enrich campus life concerning martial art and building up good learning atmosphere.
