Textbook, as the instrument bridging teaching and learning, is the manifestation of the educational theories, curriculum objectives and knowledge of disciplines under a certain social and cultural background. People across the straits, are both the descendants of Yan and Huang emperors, all using Chinese as the major language. Classical Chinese, the fruit of the Chinese traditional culture and national wisdom, is the important component of the Chinese textbook on both sides of the strait. This thesis is a comparative study of the Classical Chinese textbooks in junior high schools published respectively by Han Lin Publishing CO.LTD. and Shanghai Education Publishing House. This study is divided into six parts. The foreword combs the relative studies and defines the study issues involved. The second chapter discusses selective standards of the Classical Chinese and aims of learning it. The third chapter compares the two editions'arrangement of the Classical Chinese, including the quantity and proportion of the Classical Chinese in the textbooks, the mode of the Classical Chinese composing unit and the Classical Chinese compulsory text and optional text. The fourth chapter analyses the genre and the genre distribution of the Classical Chinese. The fifth chapter studies the leading-in system and exercise design patterns of the two versions.Based on the above study, it concludes that the proportion of the Classical Chinese prescribed by Shanghai Chinese Curriculum Standards is higher than Taiwan's. Shanghai Chinese Curriculum Standards pay attention to the reciting of the Classical Chinese, but Taiwan Chinese Curriculum Outlines don't ask students to recite Classical Chinese. SHE (Shanghai Education) edition don't accord with the demands in the aspect of the proportion of the Classical Chinese. SHE edition arranged casually; Hanlin edition arranged reasonably. The two editions have same classical Chinese text. But the Classical Chinese in SHE edition are more difficult than Hanlin edition. The quantity of ci poems and non-dramatic songs in Hanlin edition are less than SHE edition. The following is the suggestions: for the textbook published by shanghai Education Publishing House , it is advised to edit the textbook in a progressive order in term of difficulty, add proper leading-in systems and select the contents close to our life. For Taiwan part, it is suggested to increase the proportion of the classical Chinese and pay more attention on the accumulation of it in the Taiwan Chinese Curriculum Outlines; besides for the textbook published by Hanlin, it can get an improvement through the addition of the ci poems and non-dramatic songs.
