In the recent 30 years, electromagnetic metamaterials have become a hot topic around the world. As one of the electromagnetic metamaterials, left-handed material (LHM) which has a variety of special properties, has attracted a lot of attention upon today's academia. The reason is that the characteristics of this kind medium violate the rules of conventional medium. In this medium, the electric field intensity, the magnetic field intensity and the wave vector quantity assume the left hand relations. Such distinct nature has brought the medium several quite unique electromagnetic properties, and it is these properties that make the application of LHM in many fields become more and more important. Now, as many countries'researchers take deep investigations into the theory, design and application of LHM, electromagnetic characteristics of LHM have also been an important topic of electromagnetic academia. Based on the rigorous electromagnetic fields theory, the electromagnetic scattering properties of two-dimensional LHM have been investigated. The original works of this thesis are as follows:Firstly, electromagnetic scattering characteristics of the conductor cylinder coated with two-layer positive and negative materials are analyzed, and the effect of the thickness of each material on far scattering field is also discussed.Secondly, the eigenfunction series solution of multi-layered dielectric cylinder filled with conventional medium or left-handed medium is given. The electromagnetic scattering of a double-layered dielectric cylinder is discussed by using the eigenfunction expansion method, and the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of LHM is investigated. Finally, based on rigorous electromagnetic theory, the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of a conductor cylinder which is eccentric coated with different medium is investigated, and the scattering characteristics of the conductor cylinder eccentric coated with RHM or LHM were compared respectively. The RCS of the cylinder as a result of additional incident waves from different angles is also calculated. The eccentricity of LHM in reducing scattering of the conductor cylinder is pointed out.
